Hostel Caretaker - SC6

Location: London Borough of Hackney

Reports to: Hostel Manager

Hourly Rate: £17.73 - 18.54

Contract Type: Temp

DBS Requirement: Enhanced DBS check required

Job Purpose

To enhance the service provided to residents in temporary accommodation by ensuring a proactive, customer-focused approach in the management and running of the Council's temporary accommodation for homeless households.

Key Responsibilities

Support the management team in delivering a high-quality service aligned with customer satisfaction and best value.

Conduct regular visits to accommodation sites and ensure cleanliness and safety of rooms and communal areas.

Respond promptly to health and safety issues, including fire safety checks and emergency lighting.

Manage keys, room inventories, and storage of resident's possessions in cases of eviction or abandonment.

Perform minor repairs, maintenance, and general duties including cleaning and painting.

Facilitate access for contractors and professionals.

Maintain accurate records.

Person Specification

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

Understanding of support work in a devolved environment and commitment to customer-first principles.

Strong communication skills, especially with vulnerable or stressed individuals.

Ability to carry out minor repairs and maintenance.

Professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality.

Teamwork and ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders.

Physical ability to lift furniture, collect refuse, and clean communal areas.

Experience

Experience with health and safety, fire regulations, and lone working protocols.

Proven ability to maintain cleanliness and manage inventories.

Experience in identifying and performing minor repairs.

Adaptability to work in a dynamic, changing environment.

Additional Requirements

Willingness to work overtime, including evenings and weekends.

Full, clean driving licence.

Enhanced DBS check required.
