About the Role
Our client is seeking a Senior Transaction Monitoring Specialist to lead and enhance the organisation's anti-financial crime framework. This role involves managing complex investigations, optimising transaction monitoring systems, and serving as a key escalation point for junior analysts. You'll work closely with the MLRO to ensure the company's AML and CTF controls remain robust, effective, and aligned with evolving regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Transaction Monitoring & Investigations
- Lead detailed investigations into suspicious or complex alerts, identifying potential money laundering, terrorist financing, or fraud risks.
- Draft and submit high-quality Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) to the NCA.
- Oversee quality assurance processes to ensure timely and consistent escalations.
- Conduct thematic reviews of higher-risk customer groups or payment corridors.
System Optimisation
- Collaborate with data and technology teams to refine monitoring rules and thresholds.
- Support the calibration and validation of detection models, ensuring full documentation and compliance with regulatory guidance.
Policy & Framework Development
- Contribute to the ongoing improvement of AML/CTF procedures and policies.
- Maintain awareness of UK and EU regulatory updates (MLRs, FCA, FATF, OFSI) to guide compliance initiatives.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Provide coaching and guidance to junior analysts, building capability across the team.
- Act as a primary escalation point for complex or sensitive financial crime cases.
Reporting & Management Information
- Produce high-quality MI and KPI reports for senior management, highlighting emerging trends, risks, and typologies.
- Assist the MLRO with internal and regulatory reporting obligations.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with departments including Onboarding, Risk, Operations, and Product to ensure consistent financial crime controls.
- Contribute to enterprise-wide risk assessments and support internal/external audit processes.
Candidate Profile
- 7-10 years of experience in AML/CTF or financial crime roles within payments, fintech, or other regulated sectors.
- Demonstrated experience handling complex investigations and preparing SARs.
- Strong understanding of UK and EU AML/CTF frameworks (MLRSMLRs 2017, POCA, TACT, JMLSG).
- Hands-on experience with transaction monitoring systems (e.g., Lexis Nexis, Actimize, SAS, Comply Advantage).
- Excellent analytical and communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, concise reports.
- Comfortable engaging with senior stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
- ICA Diploma, CAMS, or equivalent professional qualification (preferred).
