The Ministry of Defence is looking to appoint a Chair to the Independent Medical Expert Group (IMEG).

IMEG was set up following a review of the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) in 2010. It is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) sponsored by MOD that provides assurance that AFCS policy and decision-making reflect contemporary medical understanding on causation and progress of disorders and injuries. You will be independent of the Ministry of Defence and operational activities.

The successful candidate will be an experienced clinician or epidemiologist in a relevant specialty to the Armed Forces with a demonstrable interest in research and/or evidence-based medicine.

Essential Criteria:

The successful candidate must:

• Be a medically qualified senior consultant of at least five years standing in one of the relevant specialities (trauma, orthopaedics, neurology, audio vestibular/audiological medicine, occupational medicine, mental health, epidemiology, rehabilitation), OR an occupational epidemiologist with a demonstrable and long standing professional interest in matters relevant to the Armed Forces. They must be completely independent of the Ministry of Defence, having not previously worked either in the Department or been a member of the Armed Forces.
• Have a track record of substantial academic achievement, as evidenced by publications in the peer-reviewed medical literature, such as original research, reviews, and book chapters in learned texts.
• Demonstrate an ability to apply intellectual rigour to the cross-specialty medical and scientific aspects of the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) and related matters.
• Demonstrate an ability to contribute to investigative work by drafting evidence-based, referenced reviews of topics relevant to AFCS.
• Demonstrate a track record of working collaboratively on high level committees at board level and be willing to work flexibly and engage constructively with the other members of IMEG and relevant stakeholders.

Desirable Criteria:

• Have an interest in occupational medicine, disability analysis and personal injury compensation.
• Shows skills in analysis, interpretation of evidence, discussion and reaching reasoned conclusions across a range of complex scientific and medical data. Has had their reports accepted for publication in the leading peer-reviewed scientific and medical literature and has experience giving presentations.
• Have an understanding of AFCS and how it operates and be familiar with IMEG's published reports.

This key appointment is voluntary with expenses reimbursed. It may require travel to attend board meetings, though remote options are also available.
