As an HLTA in this specialist setting, you will be working with secondary-aged students who have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion from mainstream education due to behavioural, emotional, or social challenges. Your role will involve delivering tailored interventions, supporting classroom activities and leading small group sessions to foster positive engagement in education.

Responsibilities of the HLTA:

• Support and deliver structured learning activities, ensuring students remain engaged and motivated.
• Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to implement tailored learning strategies.
• Lead small group interventions and one-to-one sessions focusing on academic and social development.
• Assist in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.
• Build strong, trusting relationships with students, fostering a sense of security and belonging.
• Use positive behaviour management techniques to support students in regulating emotions and developing resilience.
• Monitor and assess student progress, providing constructive feedback to teachers and support staff.
• Promote independent learning and confidence-building through personalised support strategies.
• Act as a mentor and role model, encouraging positive attitudes towards learning and personal development.
• Uphold safeguarding and child protection policies, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Requirements of the HLTA:

• HLTA qualification or equivalent experience in an alternative provision or PRU.
• Experience working with SEMH students or those with behavioural difficulties.
• Strong understanding of trauma-informed practice, de-escalation strategies and behaviour management techniques.
• Ability to engage, inspire and motivate students who have faced educational challenges.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with both students and staff.
• A resilient, calm and compassionate approach to working with students facing emotional and behavioural difficulties.
• Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
