Lead EMS Engineer

Salary:

• £56,940 to £71,160 (Birmingham)
• £60,000 to £81,000 (London)

Location: London (NW1) or Birmingham (B4), 2 days in office per week.

I am recruiting on behalf of a major rail infrastructure organisation for a Lead EMS Engineer to join a high-profile railway project. This is a fantastic opportunity to take on a technical authority role, ensuring the Engineering Management System (EMS) meets operational requirements for a new 200km railway with 60km of tunnels and multiple stations.

This role focuses on defining system specifications, working with designers and contractors, and overseeing the integration of thousands of railway assets into a single control interface. If you have experience in SCADA, EMS, or control systems and want to work on a large-scale rail project, this could be the perfect fit!

Key Responsibilities:

• Act as the technical lead for EMS requirements, ensuring seamless integration of control and monitoring systems.
• Define alarm prioritisation, user interfaces, and system usability for the operations control room.
• Work closely with designers, to review and approve system designs.
• Support system integration, testing, commissioning, and handover to operational teams.
• Assist in gathering evidence for regulatory approvals, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.
• Line manage one direct report.

Requirements:

• Strong experience in SCADA, EMS, or control systems within rail, aviation, power, or industrial automation.
• Understanding of system integration, monitoring, and automation solutions.
• Knowledge of alarm management and user interface development for control systems.
• Ability to translate operational needs into clear technical requirements.
• Experience working with designers, contractors, and operators to define and review system functions.

Desirable Experience:

• Rail experience is preferred but candidates from aviation, power, or industrial control systems will also be considered.
• Familiarity with design review tools like ProjectWise and Bentley.
• Chartered or working towards.
