Job Requirements/Description

We are recruiting a Media Officer for a local government client in Southeast London. To play a key role in telling the story of the local authority and its partners' key work through the media and the digital and print channels; handle media inquiries and deliver communications plans to keep a firm grip on key corporate issues.

Responsibility

The Senior Media and Communications Officer creates high-quality content on all channels for key corporate projects and is key in delivering proactive and reactive media relations and communications plans on key issues. The postholder will work closely with colleagues across the organisation, from the Chief Executive and Cabinet to frontline officers.

Qualification Essential

  • GCSE Grade (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics.
  • A professional in marketing, communications, public relations, or journalism qualification or proven experience.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Outlook, social media, and CRM.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience Requirements - Criteria-to be Tested at Shortlisting.

  • Significant experience and expertise in media relations and planning and delivering media plans, strategies, statements, responses, and events.
  • Significant experience/knowledge of digital and social media content creation and an in-depth understanding of how to tailor content for different platforms.
  • Experience providing direct advice and briefing senior managers and/or elected members on media and digital communications.
  • Experience working in a highly pressured environment and delivering results to tight deadlines.
  • Experience using insight and data to create communications plans and evaluate results.
  • Experience and understanding of handling communications for a crisis in a business, organisation, public sector or third sector body.
  • Proven ability to find solutions to communications problems and take necessary action, using all channels including digital, media and internal communications.
  • An understanding of local government, the services provided by local authorities, and the responsibilities a commission has to its residents.
  • Excellent writing skills with a clear, concise and lively prose style, and the ability to write clearly for various audiences.
  • As a Media Officer, it is crucial to maintain excellent oral communications skills and foster effective relationships at every level of an organisation. This interpersonal aspect of the role is key to successful communication and collaboration.
  • Experience planning and producing content for communications channels (e.g. e-newsletter, magazine, newspaper) with excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
