SEN Teaching Assistant - Specialist School Setting (Merton)Full-Time Term-Time Only Start Date: ASAP
Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with complex special educational needs? We are seeking a compassionate, proactive, and resilient SEN Teaching Assistant to join our specialist provision in the London Borough of Merton.
Our setting supports pupils aged 2-19 with a wide range of complex learning needs. We are a nurturing and highly supportive school community committed to providing personalised learning and holistic development for every pupil.
About Our PupilsThe children and young people in our school have a range of needs, including:
Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
Complex medical needs
Physical disabilities
Communication and interaction needs
Sensory processing differences
Social, emotional, and behavioural needs linked to communication challenges
Many pupils are non-verbal or pre-verbal and use alternative communication systems such as PECS, Makaton, communication boards, or AAC devices. Some require personal care support, mobility assistance, or feeding support. All pupils benefit from structured routines, visual supports, and a highly individualised approach.
The RoleAs an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:
Support pupils 1:1 and in small groups under the direction of the class teacher
Assist with implementing EHCP targets and personalised learning plans
Promote communication, independence, and life skills
Support pupils with personal care and medical needs where required
Help manage behaviour positively using structured and consistent approaches
Contribute to creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive classroom environment
Work closely with therapists, medical staff, and families
Has experience working with children or young people with SEND (school, care, or support setting)
Is patient, empathetic, and resilient
Understands or is willing to learn about complex needs and alternative communication methods
Can remain calm under pressure
Works effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Is committed to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing
Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, Health & Social Care, Childcare) are desirable but not essential for the right candidate.
