This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced economist to join our economics and policy analysis team in CRUK's Policy Department. The team's objective is to develop the economic argument and evidence base to influence changes to improve cancer outcomes and help life-saving science and research to thrive.

Working with colleagues across the charity in policy, communications, evidence and implementation and research and innovation, you will apply analytical thinking and economic intelligence to a range of projects in line with CRUK priorities. Examples include the cost of cancer, the economic case for reducing inequalities and the value of cancer research.

There will be a requirement to provide advice and analysis in response to pressing policy questions, as well as an expectation to develop innovative projects that make the best use of economics evidence and techniques.

What will I be doing?

• Identifying, collating, analysing and interpreting economic evidence; including novel data analyses, and reviews/summaries of published data, literature and policy documents relevant to project priority areas (including scientific research, cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment)
• Synthesizing and communicating economic evidence and arguments to a range of internal and external stakeholders and audiences, using a range of methods including formal presentations, ad-hoc discussions/emails, grey literature reports, briefings, website content, blogs, GitHub, papers for peer review, etc.
• Applying analytical and statistical methods to a range of health and cost data
• Working collaboratively with colleagues across the policy department, the wider CRUK analytical community and external collaborators to scope and deliver economic projects on identified policy priority areas
• Assisting in the planning and execution of commissioned projects, meetings and workshops as needed
• Keeping abreast of the policy context and identifying relevant issues where economic analysis and evidence would add the most value to the development of the work programme
• Contributing to providing training and share knowledge and skills with colleagues across the directorate, the CRUK analytical community and the wider department
• Contributing to cross team activities and carry out ad hoc tasks as appropriate. Perform the role following CRUK processes and guidelines with regular supervision.

What skills will I need?

• Ability to analyse, interpret and present quantitative data, economic analyses and findings preferably in the area of cancer/health or science, either from education or work experience in a relevant area
• Ability to search for, critically appraise and summarise economic evidence relevant to policy makers
• Experience in conducting economic analysis
• Possess strong communication skills and the ability to explain economic concepts to a non-specialist audience
• Experience of using spreadsheets and/or standard statistical and data management software packages, ideally R, otherwise STATA, SAS etc, with evidence of ability to learn new software languages quickly
• Experience of writing reports and briefings for different audiences, interpreting and setting in context analysis results
• Ability to quality check numerical and textual information, with keen attention to detail
• Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritise work and meet deadlines.
