About the Role As a Shift Leader, you'll take charge during shifts-providing structure, supporting colleagues, and ensuring each young person receives compassionate, consistent care. You'll lead by example, empower your team, and hold key responsibilities aligned with Children's Homes Regulations 2015 and the Quality Standards.

This is a pivotal role with opportunities for long-term development, hands-on leadership, and meaningful impact.

Key Responsibilities

Young Person-Focused Support

Oversee and track progress on Placement Plans and Risk Assessments

Lead regular Keywork sessions with assigned young people

Encourage young people's involvement in daily routines and decisions

Support planning for education, contact arrangements, and care reviews

Monitor behaviour and use trauma-informed techniques to support emotional regulation

Team Leadership & Supervision

Lead 8-12 shifts per month (including sleep-ins)

Deliver clear, effective handovers and task delegation

Supervise and support a designated team of Support Workers

Help onboard and guide new and agency staff

Champion best practices in trauma-informed care and behaviour support

Safeguarding & Behaviour Monitoring

Report and escalate any disclosures, incidents, or concerns

Complete detailed reports and support team reflection post-incident

Identify and address safeguarding risks such as CSE, absconding, or bullying

Maintain records of interventions, sanctions, and safeguarding logs

Promote emotional wellbeing and online safety awareness

Record Keeping & Compliance

Ensure daily logs, medication records, and hygiene documentation are accurate and up to date

Regularly audit incident reports, keywork notes, and communication records

Review medication logs (MAR charts) and report any issues

Maintain assigned responsibilities including petty cash, food stock, and fire logs

Health, Safety & Environment

Take part in monthly audits and emergency drills

Conduct checks on safety equipment and communal areas

Maintain high cleanliness and safety standards on shift

Report and follow up on maintenance and repair needs

Communication & Reporting

Contribute to staff meetings and team planning

Communicate team performance and support needs to the Deputy Manager

Provide updates on young people to managers and external professionals

Learning, Reflection & Development

Complete all required training and refresher courses

Facilitate reflective learning after incidents

Promote best practices across handovers and team sessions

Support staff understanding of young people's care plans and key documentation

Operational Support

Help coordinate health, education, and social appointments

Oversee petty cash and record shift spending accurately

Assist with planning birthdays, outings, and cultural events

Monitor and maintain household stock levels

What We're Looking For

At least 2 years' experience in residential childcare or a similar setting

Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or currently working towards)

Strong communication, leadership, and team coordination skills

A calm, child-centred, and resilient approach to care

Confident understanding of safeguarding and trauma-informed practices

Full UK driving licence (preferred)
