Job Title: Assistant Transport Manager
Location: Sittingbourne, Kent (Night Shift - 4 on / 4 off, 18:00-06:00)
Salary: £42,000 - £45,000 per annum (DOE)
About the Role: We are seeking a proactive and experienced Assistant Transport Manager to support the effective running of a busy 24/7 transport operation. The successful candidate will assist in managing the transport team, ensuring operational efficiency, compliance, and the delivery of exceptional customer service.This key leadership role requires strong people management skills, commercial awareness, and the ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced logistics environment.
Key Responsibilities: - Manage transport staff to execute traffic plans and ensure timely deliveries within agreed service levels.
- Support the Transport Manager in achieving operational and financial targets, maintaining cost control in line with budget forecasts.
- Ensure fleet availability and reliability to meet planning and service requirements.
- Lead, motivate, and develop team members through effective coaching, training, and performance reviews.
- Maintain full compliance with transport legislation, including driver hours, vehicle checks, and reporting requirements.
- Oversee maintenance schedules, MOTs, and servicing to ensure vehicles remain roadworthy and compliant.
- Approve and monitor maintenance costs, analysing supplier performance and spend.
- Liaise with third-party hauliers regarding pre-loading and trailer defects.
- Deputise for the Transport Manager when required and support customer review meetings.
- Promote health, safety, and environmental standards across the operation.
- Monitor and analyse KPIs to identify performance trends and implement improvements.
- Contribute to sustainability initiatives, including reducing road miles and fuel consumption.
- Ensure a secure, compliant, and safe working environment for all staff.
Experience & Qualifications: - Proven experience in a transport management or supervisory role within logistics, distribution, or FMCG operations.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate multi-shift teams.
- In-depth understanding of transport operations, legislation, and compliance requirements.
- Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving abilities.
- Commercially focused, with experience managing budgets and KPIs.
- Desirable: National or International CPC qualification.
- Desirable: Experience in shared-user or closed-book environments.
