Job Requirements/Description

Dataverse Implementation Manager
12 Months
Negotiable day rate (Inside IR35)
Mostly remote with expected visits to Belgium 1-2 times per month

My client's aim is to set up and validate a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for a multi-institutional research data repository (called "FAIRVault") based on the Dataverse open source software.

To lead and coordinate the set-up on our infrastructure, the documenting, testing and validating of the FAIRVault MVP, and the drafting of a roadmap for its future scale-up/further development, my client are looking for an implementation manager with experience in a similar context: successful implementation of a Dataverse repository for archiving & providing access to research data from a university (or similar research organisation), and ideally even of a single Dataverse instance that is used by multiple institutions.

Their wish is to find a solution for improving the FAIRness (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability), retention, and sharing of completed research data, in line with the principle "as open as possible, as closed/restrictive as necessary". Our universities and researchers share a similar need that is not being met in the current research data repository landscape. More specifically, our research datasets are not always suitable for deposit in one of the existing external data repositories, for various reasons (especially when those data fall outside of applicable selection policies, when they are more sensitive and therefore require e.g. institutionally controlled/mediated access, when it concerns larger data volumes, and/or when there is a lack of trust in service providers outside of or without link to the own institution, etc.). In such cases the lack of a suitable data repository for our researchers compromises data FAIRness and hinders compliance with requirements of research funders and other stakeholders on data sharing, retention, and where necessary data protection, and often results in suboptimal data management and storage practices for data from completed research.

To that end, the implementation manager will take on the following tasks:

  • Providing overall project management: developing and following up on the project plan (including the communication plan), identifying and assigning roles and tasks in the project, starting up the project team, organising and following up on meetings with and between involved project members at the universities, coordinating activities so that project results are achieved in a timely manner
  • Facilitating, moderating and chairing potential project working groups
  • Providing advice on establishing the MVP definition, installing Dataverse, configuring and other aspects of implementation (choices, workflows), testing the MVP with pilot users, recording relevant insights from the MVP with regard to technical, organizational and financial implications of a future operational FAIRVault service, and developing a roadmap for the future
  • Providing info sessions and contributing to other communication actions towards stakeholders
  • Initiating, contributing to, and providing final editing of written project results
  • Documenting project activities and results in a Sharepoint environment

Required skills, knowledge and experience

  • Experience of implementing a research data repository in an academic context, from both a technical and business perspective
  • Experience of the Dataverse repository software and the international Dataverse community is a must. In addition, experience of implementing a multi-institutional Dataverse instance would be an asset.
  • Experience of project management in a complex organisational context and with multiple stakeholders across institutions
  • Strong communication and IT skills
  • Knowledge of FAIR data and data-archiving/digital preservation
  • Experience of successful delivery of software projects on schedule and within budget
