Board Member
We are seeking a Board Member to help shape decisions that improve the lives of people with a learning disability and autism.
Position: Board Member (Non-Executive Director)
Salary: Voluntary role, expenses reimbursed
Location: London and remote (hybrid)
Hours: Approximately 12 days per year
Contract: 4-year fixed term (renewable)

About the role
Mencap Trust Company is seeking to appoint a new Non-Executive Director with specialist experience in social care, welfare benefits and support for people with a learning disability and autism.
This is an opportunity to play a meaningful role in improving the lives of individuals by supporting the management of discretionary trusts set up by families for their loved ones.
As a Director, you will contribute to decisions that directly affect beneficiaries, balancing quality of life, safeguarding considerations, statutory provision and the long-term sustainability of trust funds.
You will also support governance and oversight, helping to shape strategy, manage risk and act as an ambassador for the organisation.
Key responsibilities include:
Making decisions in the best interests of beneficiaries, particularly in complex or sensitive cases
Contributing to governance, strategy and oversight of risk, compliance and safeguarding
Supporting the long-term development and financial sustainability of the organisation
Acting as an ambassador, strengthening confidence among families and partners
Serving on at least one committee, including the Welfare Committee
The Welfare Committee plays a central role, focusing on beneficiary welfare, safeguarding and trust decision-making. It meets quarterly and considers complex trust requests and emerging themes.
About you
We are keen to hear from individuals who can bring insight into the realities faced by people with a learning disability and their families when accessing services such as social care, welfare benefits, health or housing support.
You do not need previous Board experience.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:
Sound judgement and the ability to contribute constructively to group decision-making
Empathy and respect for lived experience
Confidence discussing complex or sensitive welfare issues
Alignment with values including being passionate, inclusive, brave, positive and kind
Willingness to learn about discretionary trusts and trust law
Ability to commit time to meetings and preparation
Experience may come from professional roles, lived experience, or a combination of both.
