OverviewWe are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Specialist Tutor / Learning Support Professional to work on a 1:1 basis with a young adult who has a range of additional needs.
The role focuses on promoting communication, independence, and life skills, while maintaining a supportive and engaging environment that encourages confidence and personal growth. Supporting a smooth transition into post-19 education and adult life.
This position requires a calm, patient, and creative practitioner who can adapt learning approaches to meet complex needs, ensuring every interaction is purposeful, inclusive, and positive.
Key Responsibilities- Deliver engaging, structured learning sessions tailored to GO's individual needs and EHCP outcomes.
- Implement a total communication approach, using Makaton, PECS, visual aids, photos, and gestures to support understanding and expression.
- Provide 1:1 to manage communication, learning, and emotional regulation.
- Reinforce daily living and independence skills through practical, hands-on activities.
- Support sensory regulation needs and implement strategies outlined in the sensory and behaviour support plans.
- Encourage safe social interaction and participation in community-based or leisure activities where appropriate.
- Liaise regularly with family, school (Fox Grove), therapists, and the Education Lead at High Impact Academic Coaching to ensure a consistent and collaborative approach.
- Maintain detailed session notes, progress logs, and communication records in line with safeguarding and organisational procedures.
Primary Areas of Need:
- Communication and Interaction: Severe expressive and receptive language delay; uses total communication approach.
- Cognition and Learning: Requires multisensory, play-based learning with repetition and visual prompts.
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health: Needs clear routines and boundaries; may require 2:1 support during dysregulation.
- Sensory and Physical: Reduced fine/gross motor skills; benefits from sensory activities and support with personal care.
Essential Criteria- Experience supporting young people with learning disabilities.
- Familiarity with Makaton, PECS, or other augmentative communication systems.
- Understanding of EHCPs and person-centred education plans.
- Ability to manage and de-escalate behaviour calmly and respectfully.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills with a professional, empathetic approach.
